The Gospel of Luke: Chapters 8-14

So, here is the post for the second week of scripture reading. I noticed that no one read or wanted to comment on what they read last week in the book of Luke. Maybe this week we will have a little more success with the comments. I plan on writing so check back on the comments from time to time. These posts are labled and can be easyily acceced by the link to the right. Have fun and see what comes of it.

Here is more of what I have been reading in Luke about the ¨kingdom of God.¨

Luke 8:1 ¨Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.¨

Now we get into a little teaching by Jesus...

Luke 8:4-15 Jesus tells a parable or story and then explains it. He says in this passage that ¨the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you (his discilpes), but to others I speak in parables...¨ Very interesting! His disciples had been with him long enought to understand the meaning of his parables whe he explained it. But to others he needed to speak in parables so that they would at least grasp the story even if they did not grasp the significance of the parable. As Paul writes in other books of the Bible there is a mystry about the kingdom of God that is now being revealed. Jesus says that he is revelaing these ¨secrets¨. The end of his explanation of this parable he says by perservering you produce a crop or a faith or knowledge of God.

Luke 9:27, Jesus says, ¨I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.¨

The kingdom of God...
- we are meant to proclaim it (9:60)
- we are meant to commit and serve in it (9:62)

Luke 10:9,11 Jesus sends out his disciples to heal the sick and tell them that the kingdom of God is near them.

Chapter 11 verse 20 he says to the crowd that when he drives out demons from people the kingdom of God has come to them.

Luke 1¨:22-34 he teaches about not worrying. Do not worry, but seek first his kingdom and all the things you need will be given to you.

13:18-21 he compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed and to yeast. Though little at first it will grow into something grand and provide great results to benifit others.

So we go from last week with simple things written about the kingdom of God to this wek with more details and teaching about it. The kingdom of God is revealing itself and becoming tangible for all.

Nothing But Love,
Jesse
